Our final say...

I thought it was an amazing experience that I will remember for the rest of my life! I was taught a lot of things and it was so interesting to see how Australians live and what they do for their living. This is one of the things that I will never forget. I was so glad to see my Australian friends again, we were all like one big family with endless friendships! It was impressive to see how many soldiers died in the Great war and where they ended up. This trip was one of a kind and I would like to thank the two awesome teachers who took care of us like their own children! It was a two-week trip with laughter, a lot of food, fun, happiness, sun, interesting activities, beautiful war memorials , memories etc. … now in one word: FANTASTIC!

A once in a lifetime experience that I’d like to experience all over again. This trip has been so eye-opening for me. I have the feeling that I have come back wiser and very satisfied. I can honestly only look back on this trip with a big smile on my face. However the idea of going to Australia seemed scary, exciting but also not doable, it all worked out just fine. There were no moments where I felt unsafe or starving, thanks to the two great teachers whom we shared this experience with. Being so far away from home and parents can be not that nice, but the feeling of independence and joy was stronger than the fear for me. Mrs. Tytgat and Mrs. Tyberghien where our Aussie moms that let us discover but also cared for us and I really respect and am grateful for all they have done for us. It was a pity Mrs. Wijnakker couldn’t join after all her hard work, so I’d also just want to thank her for giving us all this great travel opportunity.

I guess I’m just so, so grateful that we’ve gotten this chance, have seen beautiful things, got to pay respect to fallen soldiers, see friends I wouldn’t be able to see otherwise, … Not only the teachers but also all the people who invested time or money into this amazing experience: THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH! This has been a trip of a lifetime and I can surely say I enjoyed every bit of it, which wasn’t hard with all the great company around me and all the nice activities. If I could, I would do this trip all over again.
There’s still so much to add to this text but I think I should just end with how happy I am to have had this experience. Thanks OZ!

First of all, I would like to thank Mrs. Tytgat and Mrs. Wijnakker for giving us this amazing opportunity that I will remember for a lifetime. This was a great experience and everything we did for it was worth it! I have learned a lot in the past two weeks, and it has been my pleasure getting to know more about the Aussie life. Mrs. Tytgat and Mrs. Tyberghien filled our two weeks with so much joy, from laughing at the table, to funny karaoke rides singing old songs.  Of course we all missed someone whom we left back home, like our parents, but the thing I and a couple of the other students kept saying was: “Can we just stay here for another week, please?”  I can’t stop saying thank you to the students that I shared this amazing and unforgettable trip with, you are one by one lovely and you all made this better.  We shared jokes, food, taste of  music, so many funny moments that I’m sure we won’t forget and most important is that we got to know each other better.  I think I already know where I’m living in the future, thanks to the amazing teachers!

When Mrs. Tytgat and Mrs. Wijnakker came up with the idea of doing an exchange project with Collie Senior High school, I was very surprised and exited. It’s not every day that you hear that ten students are going to Australia. Once we were out of the airport I was so happy, I couldn’t believe I was in Australia. This trip to Australia was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. And I want to thank Mrs. Tytgat, Tyberghien and Wijnakker for making this happen for us, for giving us this great opportunity. Without them it wouldn’t have been the same, of course. We had a lot of fun with them. And we were so lucky to have them with us.

Australia was awesome, everyone is so kind and respectful. Everywhere we went was amazing, we met so many wonderful people there. It felt like you were in another world. We visited so many beautiful and interesting things. I learned so much about the soldiers that fought for us and many other things. It’s so beautiful there, everywhere you go, from the beautiful King’s Park to the beaches. The whole group was awesome, I have learned more about them in those two weeks, I had such a lot of good and funny times with them, I couldn’t imagine a better group. All those memories that I’m certainly not going to forget. We had so many appreciations and compliments from everyone because of this exchange. I was so happy to hear all this, that people supported what we did.  Australia felt like you wanted to stay there forever. I’m really going to miss Australia, but I’m going back, for sure!
-          - Prescillia

I’m really thankful that I got to be part of this project. It’s been a great adventure. From the start with earning money until the end with making this wonderful journey. I have learned a lot about the culture, the different cities, the Aboriginals and Australia itself. I want to thank everyone who helped with this project and especially Ms. Tytgat, Ms. Wijnakker and Ms. Tyberghien for making this come true. It was a once in a lifetime experience. So thank you. I have a lot of great memories from this trip. The monuments, the people, the car rides with our music, the moments in our hotel rooms with the hyperactive, emotional, sometimes sad and happy moments, etc. But the greatest memory will always be Collie and its people. It was wonderful to see them again after 9 months. I will always remember them and I will definitely keep in touch. Also a thanks to the Abbott family for looking after Gwenny and me those days in Collie. Their friendliness made the days there so wonderful. The last day was also a great experience. The filming for the commercial was nice to do. I can keep on saying that this was an amazing journey and there are almost no words to describe how amazing, but I’m very grateful that I got to do this. It was like a dream coming true. I can’t believe we’re on the plane back home now, I can’t believe the journey has almost come to an end. But I will remember and treasure these memories forever in my heart. And some day I would like to go back, I would like to see my Australian friends again. Maybe one day I can do this again.

-        -  Liesl Coussens

I remember in April last year after the Collie students came to our school and I kept asking every day in English class whether we were going to Australia. I remember how happy I was when Ms Tytgat said that 10 students would get the chance to go to Australia. I remember how sad I was when I wasn’t one of those 10 students and I remember how happy I was when Ms Tytgat and Ms Wijnakker told me in June that I was allowed to come. It seemed so impossible that we would get the 30000 euros that we needed to make our journey. The activities we did were very tiring but it was totally worth it. This has been an adventure that I’ll never forget and I’m so grateful I got to be part of it. My favourite parts were when we were just hanging out and getting to know each other. I absolutely loved Collie and I want to thank the students and especially the Abbott for making us feel so at home and giving us the beautiful tour around their town, and also for showing us the kangaroos. I want to thank everyone who helped us get the money and make our dreams come true. I would also like to thank Ms Tytgat, Ms Wijnakker and Ms Tyberghien for giving me the chance to come here. I definitely want to come back here. It’s unbelievable that we’re already on our way back home. I’m sure I’ll never forget any of this and I’ve made friends for life.

-        -   Gwenllian

First, I want to thank everyone who made this dream come true, without your help we wouldn’t be here. I still know the moment when I received an e-mail from Ms Tytgat and Ms Wijnakker. I was on my way to Antwerp and when I read the mail I couldn’t believe it! First I was in shock and after a while I realised how thankful I was that they chose me to go on this amazing adventure. We worked a lot to raise the money, but with the help of our parents, Ms Tytgat, Ms Wijnakker and Ms Tyberghien we did it! We raised €30 000  in 9 months, (still can’t believe we raised it). In Australia we learned a lot. Not only about the War, but also about life, friendship and being thankful for what we have. It were two weeks full of happy moments. We saw things that we will probably never see again and made friends for life!. We shared a lot of unforgettable moments like singing in the car, making too much spaghetti, seeing dolphins in real life, etc. but the best part was seeing our friends from Collie again! We were just like one big family those two days. I’ll never forget how friendly and hospitable the people were. We did a lot of activities together, but the sing battle was the nicest part. We sang typical song from Belgium and Australia . It was a journey that I’ll never forget and I’ll hope, one day, that I’ll come back to Australia.

-         - Camille

I thought it was an incredible experience! I enjoyed every step we did to get there! I remember when I got the message on smartschool to say that I was selected to go to Australia, I was asleep when my sister came to say that she was selected. I was afraid that I hadn’t been selected but when I opened my smartschool messages I saw the positive message. My parents, my sister and I were very excited. We immediately started thinking about ideas to raise money. All the things we did to get the 30 000 euros were exhausting, but it’s because we did so many activities together as a group that we are now such a great and close group. All the things we did have been an experience for everyone. We learned to have responsibilities. Every time we got more money it was a step closer to Australia.

The trip was wonderful, we did so many great things. My favourite activity was at the Dolphin Discovery Centre. It was the first time I saw dolphins from so close. I also loved to see how everyone was watching, we were like little children. That’s not the only day I love the most, I also really love the days we spent in Collie. Our family was so nice with us, it’s a lovely family and maybe we will see them in Belgium next year. The students from Collie were also very nice to us and we have met some new people like Shaun, who is now part of the Belgian-Australian family.
I want to thank all the people who helped us realise this trip: parents, teachers, the people from Collie, the group and the people who donated money, bought things, came to activities. It’s all because of you that we had such a beautiful trip that we will always remember, these memories won’t leave!
-        - Justine

First I want to say I’m so proud of us that we reached our goal. We worked hard for it and even if it has caused a lot of stress, sleepless nights in the past nine months, it was worth it. This journey was just amazing, we saw so many things in two weeks that I would never have seen if I wasn’t going on the trip. It has learned me lots of things and I’m happy that now I know a lot more about World War I than I knew before. But now let me talk about the past months where we were working hard to sold wine, biscuits and a lot of other actions we did to raise our money.. It was hard because we were tired of working so much and for some of us it created tensions in the families but it was worth the working. And my favourite part of the trip? I would say that the facts I learned about World War 1 were my favourite but seeing the people from Collie again was the thing that made me the happiest, so yes, this would be my favourite part! And if you get the chance to go once.. Take it!! It's a unbelievable trip, I would do it again if I could!!
- Amandine

First of all I want to thank everyone who helped us raise the money and helped us make this possible. In the beginning we never tought this would come true. We are so proud that we completed our goal and we hope that the other people who will take part of this project can also make it true. This journey was unbelievable it was a great experience, full of laughter and emotions. We met a lot of amazing people and what we learned about the Australian life is that it is really laid back. But the main thing is we learned a lot about World War I. I was really amazed that from a country at the other side of the world there could be such a strong connection. It caused a lot of lives at both sides. I hope that the next generations never have to endure something like World War I. It's up to our generation to prevent something like that. But after all this was a journey all of us will never forget!

- Casey

Five days before take-off, Ms Tytgat asked if I, should it be really necessary (but chances were really slim for me she added), could travel to Australia. And before I realised it I was on the plane…

The group received me with open arms and I’m really thankful for that. Throughout the trip the atmosphere was great and Ms Tytgat and I joked at times that we were travelling with our ten daughters!
Girls, I am truly proud of you! You showed interest in the ANZAC, the memorials, the nature, the culture and the history of the country. Your enormous enthusiasm for your colleagues from Collie was at times even moving. You succeeded in forming close friendships in just two days’ time!
And of course I have learned a lot too: teenagers want to eat chips really every day, need about an hour to put on their clothes and can sing practically every song you play in the car! If you feed them they are quiet, and if you give them fizzy drinks, they don’t stop talking!
It was for all of us an unforgettable experience. In Collie they called me “The Lucky One” and I really am!
Thank you girls!
- Ms Tyberghien

About a year ago, Ms Wijnakker and I decided to take upon us the task of teaching our students of the 3rd and 4th year modern languages about World War One. More specifically we worked together to learn more about the effects of the war on our country and a country far away, namely Australia. For the students it all started with some simple research tasks and an unknown partnership with a school from Collie. It soon grew out to be so much more…
The goal was simple, the journey to get there not. We had to make many decisions, some of them easy, most of them hard. We really wanted to take the students there, without asking the parents for money. So we asked for their time, their assistance, their support. Together we worked hard to raise the necessary funds, to show everyone that it is possible if you put your mind to it. And we did it!
The closer the journey came the more my stress levels went up. The last-minute surprise of Ms Wijnakker caused me some more sleepless nights, but eventually we came up with a solution and the trip could begin.
I can only hope the students have learned as much as I have, not only about English and the War, but about life and people and cultures. I am certain that all of them have enjoyed the trip tremendously and I have to say, me too. The students were polite and friendly throughout all the ups and downs (no airco for example). They showed interest in all the places we visited and they were always positive. I am very proud of them!
- Amandine, I cannot wait to see your photos, I am sure your lens has caught some unique memories. I hope your fear of insects has diminished a bit, having survived the bush and all…
- Ayla, you have showed us that it is OK to be yourself, and not jump if someone tells you to. Your interest in prison life was a bit troublesome but in reality I was delighted with your questions.
- Camille, even though the jet lag caught you the worst, you stayed positive and laughing during the day. Your singing in the car was lovely even though the lyrics weren’t always the correct ones. We have never seen anyone enjoy eating as much as you do and we enjoyed watching you enjoy.
- Casey, it was a pleasure to have you with us. From day 1 we realised you’d have no trouble sleeping anywhere, anytime. It’s waking you up that is a bit harder, which explains the six alarms, each with a different tune on the first day in Perth.
- Diana, you were so helpful and caring to us, making sure we also ordered food and drinks for ourselves. Your happy moods made everyone instantly happy.
- Gwenllian, I think you went through the biggest transformation. You started out very quiet, never smiling in a picture, but once we had been in Collie you opened up, showing your true colours. Now that you’re 16 I’m confident you have 9 new friends and 2 teachers you will remember forever.
- Justine, you may not be the most talkative in the group, but you were definitely the most caring. You checked the rooms and cared for everyone. And you showed us fifty shades of red J.
- Liesl, you were definitely the most punctual one: always on time, tour book at hand (even if I forgot mine). You made sure we knew where we had to go, unless I mistyped the address in the gps-system. You enjoyed quietly, but from every second.
- Prescillia, we limited the luggage because we knew some people would buy a lot of souvenirs, and you did (including a new suitcase). Luckily, you learned to roll your clothes so that everything could come back home with you (although you were a bit generous in Bunbury). Your happy singing in the morning was not appreciated by all, but it always set the tone for a happy day.
- Tannia, your trip started with a bummer: your phone broke just before we left. Nevertheless you stayed positive. And this positive attitude didn’t leave you throughout the entire trip.

- Ms Tyberghien, I cannot thank you enough for saving the trip. Your patience and calm was very welcome in the stressful first days. And maybe, someday, we will be able to make a good selfie.
- Ms Wijnakker, the journey did not end exactly as we had planned. You did not see Australia yet, but you embarked on an even bigger adventure. The entire project was made possible thanks to you and ‘someone you knew who did this or that’. I can tell you it was worth the extra efforts and I really hope I can take you there sometime.

To end I would like to thank everyone who has made Atheneum Pottelberg Goes Australia 2016 possible. A special thanks to Mr Vinck and Ms Cagnie, who handed us the project and supported us through everything; Mr Tim Gurry, whose initiative (Centenary School Link Program) opened the door for a partnership with Collie Senior High School; Mr Ed Croft, who welcomed us with open arms (literally) in Collie and who arranged so much for us; the Collie parents and teachers, who were so kind to take in our students and ourselves and show us a bit more of the ‘real Australian culture’; the people of the RSL, who taught us so much more about World War One and their soldiers. And last but not least, the parents, families, friends and colleagues whose efforts made all of this possible.

This has been a wonderful journey and I am confident that Athena goes Australia has a bright future, if we just believe in it.

18 February 2016

Today it is the 18th of February and it just so happens to be my birthday. Unfortunately we had to wake up very early because we were expected at the war memorial at 7.30 a.m., so we had brekkie (Australian slang for breakfast) at 6.30. when we got to the table there were 5 balloons on it for my birthday, there was also a card which was signed by everyone and that was very sweet. I gave all my balloons names and I decided to take Mark with me for a day trip around Albany.

Then it was time to leave for the memorial where we were welcomed by a camera man and a director because we were going to film a commercial for the dawn service on ANZAC day for the RSL. We were all very excited because it was going to be shown on channel 9 which is apparently one of the biggest tv channels in Australia. First we filmed a few shots with a drone, but there was a lot of wind so all our hair kept blowing in our faces. Then Ayla read her line and we all said ‘lest we forget’. Next we went a little bit down the hill to a place where there were plaques to honour the soldiers. There Amandine and Justine read their lines and we had to do some walking shots. We were being very professional and serious when suddenly a bug decided to start biting people. Of course we all screamed and ran away, which the Australians found hilarious. When we finished there we went to the ANZAC centre where me and Prescillia read our texts. We also did some shots of us staring poetically into the distance but of course the director decided that we had to have the wind in our back and our faces to the sun, so we again had hair in our face and we could barely keep our eyes open.

Then we went to the beach but they still had figure out some stuff so we all got a drink. Most of us chose hot coco. We played some games at the table and we had heaps (Australian slang for a lot) of fun while Liesl and Tannia said their lines. Then we did went out to film some more. We all had to stand on rocks while Camille read her line. Then we again had to stare into the distance and for the same reasons as before I did not like it. Then we had to sit on rocks and stare into the distance (there was a lot of staring into the distance). After that we went to another place on the beach and Casey and Diana read their lines. Then we did some more walking shots. Later we all had to read the whole text in Dutch and English in case we couldn’t hear it because of the annoying wind (I wanted to use a certain swear word but it wasn’t allowed). And in case it isn’t clear how annoying it was it was about a million times more annoying than a mosquito flying around your head all night.

Then we went to Maccas (Australian slang for McDonalds), we were all really happy because we had been asking to go there since the first day. After that we went back to the hotel restaurant for a ‘meeting’. In fact it was just an excuse to give me cake. It was very good cake (oreo!!!!!!) and I also got a kangaroo wallet. After we all ate the cake we went to a museum about whalers (people who killed whales for a living). It was very interesting. We also watched a 3D movie about whales, but unfortunately we didn’t see any real whales.

After that we went back to the hotel and started packing our suitcases. At 7.30 we ate dinner and some of us had dessert. Now I’m writing this text and we’re going to try to skype with our class in school and then we’re going to sleep to get ready for tomorrow and our journey home.

17 February 2016

Today it is the 17th of February and  this is so close to when we’re going back to Belgium. Today we went the ANZAC centre in Albany. We all got a card with a soldier who we could follow through his journey and we could get to know him a little bit more and what he did during the Great war. We also got an audio phone where we could listen to the stories of some people during the war. It was so interesting to hear their stories and to see the little movie clips and texts. After the tour we could write a little text to our soldier and it would appear on the screen, it is a good activity to show our respects for the soldiers who died. I saw a little text of a person who said ‘thank you Belgium’ that was so nice to see! After that we went to the souvenirs shop and bought some things to have a little memory.

Then we went to the beautiful war memorial which has a lot of stairs. It was so hot and we had to do all these stairs but it was worth it because of the beautiful view and memorial. We also saw a black lizard! After we honoured our soldiers and Gwenny read her poem we went to do our last day of shopping!

Everyone was excited and happy to have some shopping! After the shopping we went back to our hotel and put on our bikinis we were a bit shocked because we don’t remember making our beds so we were a bit scared that it was the roomservice haha!
And then we went out to the beach! It was a bit cooler down there but some of us jumped into the sea and there were a lot of waves. We jumped into the waves and swam a lot! Some of us were laying down and reading some books. And then we went back to our hotel and freshened ourselves up and here we are sitting in a beautiful restaurant besides the sea waiting for our diner to come! It was a very fun and interesting day!

Tuesday 16 February

We got up today at 6.30, because we had to be at the restaurant for breakfast at 8 o’ clock. Before we could go eat we had to wait for Casey because she hit her toes a few times. After a delicious breakfast we loaded our luggage in the car and left for Denmark. The car ride was supposed to be 2 hours and a half, but it took a bit longer because Camille had to go to the toilet. There was only one problem there was no toilet in sight. So there was only one solutions. She had to go in the bushes. Gwenny went with her, but not before Casey said: be careful for snakes and other insects.

10 minutes later, we found a gas station and this time it was Casey and me who had to go to the toilet, together with some others. After finally arriving in Denmark we went to the War Memorial and Diana read her poem.

After that we had lunch, which was for some fries again, we drove to the Giant Tree Top Valley. There we went for a walk in the trees.

Some liked it very much, others were very scared. After the tree walk we went to the gift shop and bought some gifts for friends and family. Then we also did a walk in a garden and found some interesting information about the trees and the animals. When we left we drove for another hour and a half to the hotel. We finally arrived at the hotel and we unpacked. Some people (Casey and Ayla) threw their clothes around since we're staying here for 3 days. We went eating in the restaurant but some of us couldn’t choose fries again because we had a lot of fries already. Now here I am writing while lying on the bed eating candy with Camille, Amandine, Casey and Gwenny next to me. It was a day full of driving but we had a lot of fun because we connected our phones to the car and played a lot of music.

15 February 2016

Today we slept in so we woke up at 8.30. After we had packed, we had breakfast in one of our little houses. After that some of us checked whether we had forgotten anything, the others washed the dishes or put the luggage in the car. Then we had a 1 hour and a half  journey to Bridgetown. When we arrived we went to the Memorial Park to see the monument, there Liesl read her poem and after the pledge we had a minute silence.

Some of us were scared of the wasps in the park so it was quite funny for those who weren’t scared of them. It was about 12.30 when we left the park so we went eating in the Cidery, it was very tasty and the cider was so good! (it was a non-alcoholic one, don’t flip parents ;) )

It wasn’t 3 pm so we couldn’t check in yet so we went to see alpacas, it was so much fun and we were allowed to touch them so everybody was excited. After feeding and caressing them we needed to go the hotel so we left. We checked in and then went to see the Christmas shop, but it was closing when we arrived. The teachers had another nice shop in mind, a candy shop! Unfortunately we needed to wait 20 minutes, because the owner wasn’t there. When he finally arrived he gave us a free candy and then we bought a lot of candy!!

It was about 5 pm when we left the shop and we immediately went swimming because we have a swimming pool in our hotel.

And now we're in the restaurant, writing this to post on the blog after we ate a very delicious meal and dessert. It was a fun day today.

14 February 2016

Yesterday the 14th February (on Valentine’s Day) we again had to wake up really early, at 7am. We had to be at Yallingup at 9am, and the reason it had to be that early was because it’s easier for us to get a tour in the caves because it was calmer if we were alone. The guide was very friendly and he showed us how the people used to live in the Aboriginal culture. On our way to the caves he showed us which plants they used as medicine, we just screamed because we saw a spider being attacked by a wasp. The guide, Josh, thought that it was really funny to see!

He then took us into the caves and talked about the history of it and also told us a story about his family background.   He also played a song for us with the Didgeridoo, which was really beautifully done.
We got 30 minutes free in the caves and, oh, it was so hard going up and down the stairs, but it surprised us that Prescillia wasn’t crying because of it :p .  It was so beautiful, it was amazing to see. After that we learned how to make fire and we played music with him, it was so much fun!!!!! Some of us ate Kangaroo for the first time and it was delicious, it tastes like steak. They also made us chicken, mussels and salad, we liked it!

It was very hot yesterday so we had the chance to go for a swim and we played in a huge water playground, we laughed so much, it was really funny. When we had enough of it we went to the McDo so we could steal all the WiFi, very gangster of us (except we used it to talk to our mummies and daddies). We had a drink and after we used all the Wifi we needed, we left (after 2 hours).
We cooked! Priscillia and I made spaghetti and it was a drama because we only had mini little tiny saucepans, like miniature little sauce pans and the most smallest pans in the world, no exaggerating :p So we had to cook in that and it took us like 2 hours to finish.

Diana, Ayla and Justine then did the dished and in the meantime I was taking a shower when Amandine came in and asked me where the door was.  I was really confused by what she meant but then she said the kitchen closet door was gone and she was looking everywhere for it, even under the beds. Really funny, the teachers were laughing so hard! We all were! Amandine was convinced that there used to be a door but there wasn’t. We had a good laugh about it. And so ended our night, laughing.

Collie experiences

Casey & Camille

In Collie we stayed with Olivia. When we first arrived at her house our mouths fell open. The house was really nice and big. The parents were very lovely, sweet, friendly.. just all the nicest things you can say about people. The first night was just perfect, we had a really nice self-made pizza and had a lovely chat. Then we watched the stars outside and for the first time in our lives we saw a shooting star. The queen size bed was heaven! Never slept so well like that night. The next morning we had breakfast at the motel and tried vegemite for the first time. It was horrible! The tour in their school was interesting, especially to see the difference between our and their school. Now the most exciting was still coming when  we were going to shoot with a real gun. I (Casey) was the first one to try it and I was nervous at first but when I held the gun in my hands all the stress went away. The experience was really fun and I liked it a lot so I did it 3 more times. I (Camille) was nervous too. When I shot I was so in shock, that I even didn’t got a clue I hit one, but I liked it. Than we had the barbeque, it was really cosy and the food was delicious especially the desserts. At the end of the night we had a sing battle between the Australian kids and the Belgian ones. It was a perfect day for us! To end the night perfectly we watched the stars again at Olivia’s house. The morning after it was really hard not to cry because we needed to say goodbye to everyone. We both nearly cried but we held strong. The 2 days in Collie were the best! We are never going to forget this amazing experience!

Tannia en Diana

We stayed at Miss Carmen’s house and she’s a teacher at the Collie Senior high school. We loved her and her house! She has such a lovely house and the garden full of beautiful birds. Her husband, Chris is also very friendly, and not to forget, he took us hunting for kangaroos! Not hunting with a gun, but with a big spotlight. The funny thing was, she’s vegetarian and she was laughing because we actually thought she was only giving us vegetables when we didn’t even mind it . But her husband isn’t a vegetarian so he made us make a choice between chicken (we love it!) or steak and we chose steak because we ate too much chicken this week :p . The next day we had to be with the group at 8am so we woke up at 7am to take a shower. We tasted vegemite! It was so gross, oh my god! Never again! They were all laughing at us and we wish we could bring you some so you can taste the grossness. After that we went to their school to see it. They gave us a tour of the school and taught us how to play typical Australian football!  We did had lunch at a park where they have kangaroos and we weren’t really surprised because we saw them the night before haha. After our kangooroo seeing we went on the bus and we saw the beautiful lake of Collie it was a wonderful view.  And then we headed to the gunclub where the father of John shoots and he taught us how to shoot a gun. At first we were very nervous but after all it was such a great experience and we had a lot of fun! We ate yummie lunch and Barbie and laughed so hard with our friends. When it got night all the students went go seeing bluewater’s powerstation. It was so beautiful and fun! When we got back we had a bit of a Dutch-English song contest and we won, hahaha, K3 songs are the best! We had a super great night and cried a lot because we were going to miss them a lot! The day after all the students came to the highschool and said their goodbyes. It was a bit emotional because we were very good friends and we will miss them a lot! We are one big family!

Justine en Amandine

We stayed at the Moulden’s house, David and Sharron are the parents of James who is now staying in Belgium. We loved seeing their animals, their daughter and an exchange student from Italy: Alice. They were very nice to us. They gave us a room for ourselves. The first night we ate barbecue with the family Mouldon, some friends of them and even Jarrod was there. At this barbecue we met a new friend Shaun, he is also a student at the Collie senior High school. There were sausages, bacon, lamb and even kangaroo. We tried Kangaroo and we really liked it!! But the idea that we were eating kangaroo was weird. After everybody went home we went to bed because we had a big day the next day. We woke up at 7 o’clock and at 8 we had some breakfast with the students from Collie SHS. After that we went to see their school, it was weird to see that everything was outside and there were no storeys. We have 4, so a lot more stairs, that’s not fun L. Then we went to the premier coal, it’s a mine. It was not really my thing but it was still interesting. After we had lunch we went to see kangaroos and it was the first time we saw kangaroos so we were so excited!! We went to a spot where we had an amazing view and after there we went to the gun club and we actually shot with real guns!! Me, Amandine didn’t really like it but Justine did. We had a Barbie there and at night we were doing a battle with English/Dutch songs. After that we went back at the Moulden’s house and went sleeping. Thank you again David and Sharron it was fun to stay with you!!

Liesl & Gwenllian

We stayed with the Abbott family. We met their son James on tour last year. We were really nervous to meet them but that was unnecessary because they were the nicest people in the world. We were dropped off at their house by Mr Croft because Anthea wasn’t feeling well so she couldn’t come to pick us up. There we met her and her husband Jaime. She showed us our rooms and then Jaime brought us to Brianna’s house for a party. After we swam there for a while Jaime came to pick us up with their daughter Kate, she was very sweet and has beautiful eyes. Then we went back to their house and met their oldest son Luke and his girlfriend Lizzie, along with their grandparents. We had dinner in the garden next to the pool where we talked about the differences between our school and their schools. The food was very nice. After that we went inside and talked for a while about the tour and the places we’re going and have been to. While Anthea looked up a recipe for oreo-cheesecake we talked with our friends and family on facebook. We looked at the clock and noticed it was already quite late and decided to go to bed. After a good night sleep we woke up and had a shower. Then we went to a motel for breakfast and of course we were late. They made us eat vegemite, we both didn’t like it at all. Then we went to the mine and the golfclub to see kangaroos, after that we went to the dam. Unfortunately some of the Australian kids had to leave to go to a basketball game in Perth. So we dropped them of at their homes and went to the gunclub. We all tried to shoot a gun and some people were more successful than others. We then had a lovely bbq and went to the power station to see the beautiful lights. We then sang Belgian songs while the Australians sang Australian songs, it was a lot of fun. Of course the night had to end at some point so at nine o’clock we went back to the house. Luke and Lizzie were there again and we talked for a while about all sorts of stuff. We went to bed at around 11 o’clock. In the morning we were woken up by Kate and had eggs and bacon made on the barbecue, it was very tasty. Before we left we got a lovely gift and took a picture to go in their grandma’s scrapbook. Unfortunately it was time for us to go. We said goodbye to Jaime and Anthea took us to the teacher’s cars. Then we had to say goodbye but we promised we’d keep in touch and we really hope we do.

Ayla & Prescillia

While on the road to Collie, we were  so excited to see our mates. Because we had to miss them for several months. Once we arrived in Collie at the park where the War Memorial ceremony would take place, we saw our Collie friends and literally jumped each other in the arms. Ayla was a bit nervous to read the known poem “For The Fallen”, because she was scared for making mistakes in front of everyone. But it worked out after all and got some compliments of the students and teachers. After the ceremony we all went and had some Australian treats and listened to some nice speeches which warmed our hearts.
We slept at Brianna’s place so we headed of to her house where we later that evening had a pool party with all our friends. They spoilt us with delicious Aussie treats such as Tim Tams and Fairy bread. When everyone left and the two of us together with Brianna and her family we had a yummy dinner which consisted of meat pie, peas, carrots and mash. In the evening we put on our pyjamas and we went in her garden because we were going to sleep in a tent which was awesome. In her backyard, we found a frog and we touched it for the first time, it was so slimy! We had to sleep so we put the tent on the grass and we watched a movie and ate some Australian chocolate cookies. In the morning we woke up with a delicious breaky were all the students joined us. And we ate Vegemite for the first time, and it wasn’t good. Nasty, it was just nasty! Then we went to visit their school; ‘Collie Senior High school’. We had so much fun and we were impressed by their beautiful school.
Later in the bus on the way to a coal mine we got to laugh and talk some more with the Aussies! The mine experience was interesting and when they blew up the ground for mining (which we got to see from far) we all jumped because it scared us, it was funny though. Later we went to a golf course where we had lunch and saw kangaroos. We were all so excited! We even jumped and clapped our hands like sissygirls and took a lot of pictures.
This last part made us feel weird and very badass at the same time. We went to a shooting club and all got a shot at shooting. We were full of adrenaline and had gotten hungry so we had a barbie and nice talks while eating nice food. For some reason we were all so hyper that night because we had a sing -off with the Australians with Belgian and OZ-songs. (we kind of beat them haha) Guess we had a sugar rush of all the yummy desserts. After laughing it was time for saying goodbye to most of our friends, then some of us started crying because we’ll miss them. Even though tears were shed we can look back on two marvellous days with our mates, which we’ll never forget.

We really loved it to stay at Brianna’s house, we had so much fun and her family is so nice, we really enjoyed there and we hope to see them again.
